Introduction

Digital image processing is an important technique to the consumer video electronics or other video capture devices. The digital image stabilization system is especially an important component used in the application such as security surveillance, military reconnaissance, and digital camera. The task of image sequence stabilization is accomplished by estimating and then compensating the global motion to remove the involuntary image movement caused by, for example unstable hand-shake or vibration. Our research targets to develop the fast and cost-effective image stabilization algorithm on the embedded system such as digital camera.

Achievements

Motion Field based Image Stabilization

We developed a simple but practical and robust image stabilization syetem. The global motion is eastimated using motion field. By low-pass filtering, the hand shake effect can be removed successfully. Compared with feature-based or pixel-based global motion estimation algorithms, our algorithm is faster and more suitable to implement on mobile devices. The system and its impact on coding performance is reported in [ISIMP2004]. We also implemented the system on the DSP board and presented it in [ICME2005].

Integration of Image Stabilizer with Video Codec

Digital image stabilizer and video codec are two important and essential components of a digital video camera. Both systems require motion information of the captured image sequence to perform their respective tasks. Since motion estimation is a computationally intensive operation, we proposed three schemes for integrating the electronic image stabilizer with the video codec. By sharing the motion information, the compuatational cost of the overall system is greatly reduced while the performance of the image stabilizer and the video codec are not affected. This work has been reported in [ISCAS2005] and [CCNC2005].
